Chawalo Area–
Lower Zambezi River
The stretch of Zambezi River utilised by Chawalo
Safaris is famous for the large number of trophy
tiger fish and massive vundu on offer. This
section of river is unique in that it covers
the area that the fast flowing waters of the
Zambezi River begin to flow into the calmer
waters of Cahorra Bassa Dam. Here the
river spreads out into numerous channels, offering
a myriad of drop offs, islands, and channels
in which to fish. The structure in this
section of water is home to vast number of bait
fish, and therefore attracts tiger fish from
the relatively less bait-fish-rich waters both
up and down stream.
Due to the camp being centrally located with
in this productive stretch of water, most fishing
is no more that 10 km from the lodge.
Chawalo Safari Camp is situated on the Northern
bank of the Mighty Zambezi River, 15km East
(down stream) from the district capital of Zumbo.
Zumbo is on the confluence of the Zambezi and
the Luangwa Rivers. The concession runs 90km
north up the Luangwa River from the confluence
and 25km east down the Zambezi. The total area
is approximately 334 000 hectares.
Angling (species and methods): Tiger
fish (H.Vitias) are the main quarry
with vundu, catfish and the occasional bream
also falling to artificial flies, lures and
drift baits.
