Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers, Tanzania: << BACK TO DESTINATIONS PAGE...
Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers, Tanzania | Okavango River | Upper Zambezi
Lower Zambezi | Sterkfontein Dam | Lesotho | Inhaca Island | Seychelles | New Zealand

The Mnyera and Ruhudji Rivers together offer one of the last remaining frontiers of freshwater fishing – as of November 2008 less than 15 individuals have fished these amazing waters. Set deep in an untouched corner of the Tanzanian Wilderness, this area is famous for being home to monster 20lb+ tigers. The river banks are also home to big game and many rare and endemic bird species.

The discovery of this system in August 2008 has been widely acknowledged as one of the highlights in African Sport fishing over the past decade. To indicate the enormity of the discovery, in the past half century that fly fisherman have been targeting tigers on fly, a 20lb fish was not landed. This statistic was shattered in 2008 when 8 fish over the 20lb mark were landed in as many days at Mnyera!

The season runs from 1st August to 10th November. It is during these months, when the water temperatures rise and the clarity increases that the trophy tigerfish of Mnyera River begin to feed aggressively. Fly fishing large black whistlers and clousers,to structure has proven the most successful way of tempting the brutes of the Mnyera River, into battle.

The 2009 season’s catch data indicates clearly that the strict beat rotation implemented was a success. The average number of trophy fish landed per week was consistent throughout the season. The discovery of excellent waters close to the headwater of the Ruhudji Rivers has opened up a further 30km of productive waters. We are thus in a very pleasing position of being able to offer 7 individual beats for all groups. The season has been limited to the 16 absolute best weeks in the year with a max of 4 rods per week.

Each beat will be fished once every 7 days, ensuring no area is ever over-fished. Tourette Fishing has partnered with long standing Tanzanian safari outfit Kilombero North Safaris (KNS) to offer the finest guided tiger fishing in Africa.

KNS Managers, Ross and Alex Cumming’s fundamental operating principles of low impact and sustainable tourism ventures in all the KNS areas under their management, mirrors our philosophy of sustainable and exclusive fly fishing operations.

By offering the finest outfitting, concession management, and year round anti poaching (land and rivers), combined with the most experienced guides, cutting edge beat management and leading operations managements, Tengo Tiger Safari offers undoubtedly the finest fresh water fly fishing in Africa.
