mountains. This great highland comprises nine-tenths of the 30500 km2 state of Lesotho, home of the Basotho. They know the area simply as Maluting - meaning a place of mountain ranges. To the Europeans, it is the Switzerland of Africa, the rainy roof of Southern Africa, and the principle watershed of South Africa where the Orange, Caledon and several other large rivers have their source.

The Mountain streams of the Lesotho highlands offer some of the best trout fishing in Africa. Rainbow trout were introduced to these streams in 1932. The fingerlings were carried on pack mules and released into the streams where they flourished in the unpolluted water rich in natural foods. Yellow fish and barbel are found in the lowland rivers. The high altitude and cold temperature lend themselves well to year round trout fishing in Lesotho.
