As the enthralled angler released this superb tigerfish, so too did the threatening clouds release their rain, offering brief respite from the African heat.

whilst touring in Zambia. These destinations lend themselves well to some of Africa's most exciting and challenging fresh water fishing.

The main species targeted in Kariba are the renowned tigerfish and numerous tilapia species. Vundu, cornish jack, bottle-nose, chessa, and nkupe can also be caught on this majestic piece of water. A houseboat fishing safari organized by Tourette Fishing is guaranteed to be a truly distinctive African fishing experience. Lake Kariba is best fished in the warmer summer months, but proves productive throughout the year.

The Zambezi River is one of the major rivers in the world, and by itself, is a majestic spectacle. The surging flow of the water, the riverine forest, the rich aquatic life, the birds and game animals, the enigmatic nature, the unpredictable moods of a river so vast are awe-inspiring.

The local tribesman have a song which they sing as they paddle its waters:

"The mighty Zambezi,
Nobody knows
Where it comes from,
Or where it goes.
I only know
It is born in the skies
And flows to far places
Before it dies."

The impressive Zambezi River is home to all fish species mentioned above. All species can be targeted individually on the Zambezi River, be it the sleek river tigerfish or the elusive cornish jack. The Upper Zambezi produces good fish during the winter months. As the water recedes from the flood plains, it brings with it numerous small fry and deposits them in the main channel, where the

predators wait. Fly-fishing and art lure fishing for tigers and nembwe during June and July is possibly the most exciting fresh water fishing in Africa. The Middle Zambezi, below Lake Kariba is best fished during the warmer summer months, however good fishing can be had year round.

The beauty of fishing either of the above-mentioned destinations is that at all times one is surrounded by the spectacular African bush and its animals. Kariba, the Middle and Upper Zambezi are surrounded by National Parks and wilderness areas, some home to Africa's Big Five! Nothing quite beats the feeling of drifting past a herd of elephants while fighting a tigerfish and listening to the majestic call of the African Fish Eagle.

Zambia is also home to the famous South Luangwa River and South Luangwa National Park. The river is legendary for its massive crocodiles and thriving vundu population. South Luangwa River is host to most of the fish species found in the Zambezi River. The South Luangwa National Park is known world wide for its prosperous leopard population.
