Duma River Camp - Trophy Tiger Safari

Years of research, countless scouting trips and many nights spend camping wild on remote African rivers have finally paid off. In August 2008 we discovered a stretch of water which in our opinion, and that of the lucky few who have had the opportunity to fish it, offers the finest fresh water fly fishing in Africa. In the past, trophy tiger fish have been classified as fish above 10 lb's. This has been shattered with the average fish in this system coming home at 9lb. Here fly fisherman have a real opportunity of landing tiger fish of over 20lb's. In fresh water this is almost unheard of. Now combine this fact with the speed, strength, aerial antics and aggressive nature of the tiger fish and dump it all in river flowing through one of the words last true wilderness areas, abounding in big game, and then you may begin to get an idea of just how unique this fishery is.

Tourette Fishing has negotiated the exclusive fly fishing rights to this magnificent river and is pleased to be able to offer fly fishing safaris to this wonderful location. The season is limited to the best 8 weeks in the year with a limit of 4 rods per week. Thus ensuring the system remains productive and exclusive for our client's enjoyment. Full details of the package are included below.

Destination: Duma River Camp - Tanzania

Season: 20 August - 10 November

Duration: 7 nights - 5 1/2 days fishing

Accommodation: Safari Tented Camp

Camp details: Duma River Camp is a simple yet very comfortable tented camp which is erected each season from scratch. All tents contain two large single beds, showers, flush toilets and hand basins. All linen is provided. Hot water is from a donkey boiler which is prepared each morning and evening. All furniture is fashioned from local woods and is tasteful and functional.

Dinners are enjoyed under the stars in the outdoor boma or around the campfire.

Wild Life: Duma River Camp is situated in the middle of the 6000 square km big game concession. Buffalo, lion, leopard and elephant are common in the area, as well as a host of plains game species including puku, warthog, hartebeest, zebra, eland and bushbuck amongst many

The bird life is exceptional with many rare and endemic species found in the area. Pels Fishing Owl, along with Palmnut Vultures, Narina Trogans, Broad Billed Roller and white backed night heron all make this riverine environment their home.

Angling (species and methods): Tiger fish (H. vittitus) are the main quarry with catfish and the occasional bream also falling to artificial flies. Fly fishing is far and above the most successful method to target the massive tiger fish in these waters. This unique venue offers diverse fly fishing opportunities.

The Fly Fishing Experience: Duma River Camp offers the adventurous fly fisherman the ultimate African fly fishing safari. With access to 40km on two adjacent rivers, 7 km of rapids and the unique option of fly camping under the Africa stars, the African safari experience is as much a part of this trip as the big tigers you can expect to encounter.

The majority of the fishing is done on the drift on one of the two rivers we have access to. We use 16ft aluminium boats with 25Hp outboards for all fishing. Here our attentions are focused on the river structure which comprises fallen timber, long sand banks, steep drop-off's and rocky out crops. When conditions dictate we also make use of sand anchors and tying up to structure mid stream to focus our attentions on a specific stretch of water.

From Duma River Camp you have access to 7km of pristine rapids. These waters are fished off inflatable two man rafts. Due to the extreme nature of fishing these rapids they are only fished in low water times. Your guides will determine when it is safe to fish these waters. We offer the opportunity to fish these rapids for single and multi day excursions.

This river has received very little fishing pressure over the centuries, and with our controlled fly fishing venture will continue to do so. The system is also extremely rich in bait fish (predominantly red finned barbs). The combination of these factors has resulted in this population of tiger fish obtaining otherwise unheard of sizes. The average size fish one expect to hook ranges between 8 and 12lbs. Trophy fish in this system are measured above 20lbs. Be prepared to have you fly fishing paradigms shifted!

By limiting the season to only 8 weeks with a max of 4 rods per week, adopting an intensive catch register, combined with ongoing research with leading academic institutes we are confident that the continued success of this fishery will be maintained.
