Natal Snoek

Other Names
Spotted or Queen Mackerel, streaked Spanish Mackerel or Kanadi Kingfish.
Description
This fish is typically elongate and torpedo shaped, but is slightly more compressed than most mackerels. It is easily distinguishable by the series of horizontal broken lines and spots that cover the flanks of the fish. Although the fish is a formidable adversary and fights hard, it is a smaller species than its cousin the couta.
Colour
This species is blue-grey above the lateral line with a white belly. The sides of the fish are remarkably silver. The belly shine of this fish can be used to make fantastic strip baits for sailfish and couta.
Size
Can attain a length of up to 120 cm and a weight of 10 kg.
Habitat
The natal snoek is a shoaling fish that prefers shallower water. This species is better targeted in water less than 10 meters around rocky outcrops, river mouths and coral reefs.
Angling
The sight of a feeding shoal of natal snoek is fantasti, with the natal snoek chasing baitfish to the surface, and the water erupting in a frenzy of hunter and hunted. Small artificial lures and fillet baits work well with this species.
