Nkupe
 
Description
Click to see larger image. A small nkupe caught on the middle Zambezi. Some anglers are of the opinion that nkupe are the strongest fighting fish, pound for pound, in the Zambezi River.

A deep bodied fish with a protruding snout and a terminal mouth. A rounded dorsal fin distinguishes this fish from the very similar chessa.
Colour
Juviniles are silver with several very prominat vertical bars. Adults darken to a deep olive/green with a white throat and pale yellowish ventral surface.
Size
Up to 6 kg.
Habitat
Appears equally at home in swift flowing water, rapids or quiet, deep, sandy or rocky pools.
Distribution
Lake Kariba the Middle and Lower Zambezi Zambezi River and their larger tributaries.
Abundance
Plentiful in the Zambezi River and larger valley tributaries.
Angling
There is a strong group of anglers who believe that the Nkupe and Chessa, weight for weight, are amongst the most exciting sporting fish in Southern African waters. A great variety of baits have proven successful including worms, insects, entrails of birds, fish fillets, meat and are now days targeted on fly.
