![]() Cobia. Description The prodigal son is a long, cigar shaped fish, virtually cylindrical in shape. A notable characteristic of the prodigal son is its broad depressed head, which many anglers have mistaken for that of a shark. Colour The overall body colour is dark brown above and creamy below. Two distinct, broad, silvery-white bands run the length of the body. Size The prodigal son can reach a length of 120 cm and a weight of 40 kg. Habitat This predator frequents coral and rocky reefs and has a preference for clear warm water. Often specimens are found in association with whale sharks and other large fish. Abundance Although common, the prodigal son often prefers to move in small groups, and not in large shoals. It is a migrating fish, and although its visits are erratic, peak abundance occurs in Southern African waters during the summer months. Angling Prodigal son are targeted with artificial lures and flies. The use of baits, including crab, mole crab and crayfish also prooves successful. |
