General Description and habitat:
There are a large number and variety of shark species available to the angler who wishes to target them in the salt waters of the Indian Ocean. The main species available for targeting on the flats of the Seychelles include blacktip reef Sharks, grey reef sharks, blackfin sharks, and small lemon sharks. These are the major flats sharks species that are increasingly becoming popular fly rod species to target.

The general size and the grey nondescript colour of the sharks make them unmistakable from any other species on the flats. Species dependant, but the majority of the shark species are capable of reaching 2 meters in length and weights of over 100kgs, although any shark over 50kgs would be considered very large.

  Angling Tackle and Tactics:

Fly:

In the past sharks have never been a highly esteemed or sought after fly rod species, although many species have had a long standing place in the hearts of conventional rock and Surf anglers. The shark species have however been gaining a lot of popularity in recent years, as more fly rod anglers have found to enjoy their good quality as a genuine game fish species. Most are immensely strong, make fast runs, have stamina to make long fights, and some species will even jump.

For the majority of the smaller specimens found on the flats a Standard set-up of a fast action 9ft 10wht rod will be adequate. A large arbor reel, with a smooth drag, filled with matching floating, or intermediate line and 20-30lb backing completes the rig. For larger specimen’s a set-up of 12wht will suffice.

Leader set-up is generally a simple 9 to 10ft leader comprising of a 100 lb butt section, tapered down to 80lb’s, a short section of number 7 or 8 piano wire completes the leader set-up.

Fly selection is generally quite limited to large streamers, either a natural colour or a hot orange or red. The hooks have to be large, in the 6/0 to 9/0 range, and of an excellent quality to withstand the pressure that the sharks place on them.

Comprehensive tackle lists, compiled for each unique salt water fishing area, will be sent out on request keith@tourettefishing.com or on booking.
