Tackle and Tactics: Fly:
In
the past sharks have never been a highly
esteemed or sought after fly rod species,
although many species have had a long
standing place in the hearts of conventional
rock and Surf anglers. The shark species
have however been gaining a lot of popularity
in recent years, as more fly rod anglers
have found to enjoy their good quality
as a genuine game fish species. Most
are immensely strong, make fast runs,
have stamina to make long fights, and
some species will even jump.
For the majority of the smaller specimens
found on the flats a Standard set-up
of a fast action 9ft 10wht rod will
be adequate. A large arbor reel, with
a smooth drag, filled with matching
floating, or intermediate line and 20-30lb
backing completes the rig. For larger
specimen’s a set-up of 12wht will
suffice.
Leader set-up is generally a simple
9 to 10ft leader comprising of a 100
lb butt section, tapered down to 80lb’s,
a short section of number 7 or 8 piano
wire completes the leader set-up.
Fly selection is generally quite limited
to large streamers, either a natural
colour or a hot orange or red. The hooks
have to be large, in the 6/0 to 9/0
range, and of an excellent quality to
withstand the pressure that the sharks
place on them.
