Destination: Sterkfontein Dam.

Season: November through to end of March

Duration: Single and Multi day Options. Multi day trips are advisable to truly appreciate this world class fishery.

Sterkfontein Dam: With a shore line of over a hundred kilometres, this high altitude body of water offers arguably the finest freshwater sight fishing Africa has to offer, on par with top international destinations. The crystal clear water, combined with a healthy yellowfish population make this destination a firm favourite amongst all fly anglers privileged enough to hunt her waters.

The Fishing: Small mouth yellowfish , and to a lesser degree large mouth yellowfish .

Small mouth yellow in Sterkfontein are treated to a multitude of both terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates on which to feed. The results being that fly anglers can confidently target these freshwater speedsters with dry flies through out the season, a method we strongly encourage.

Stalking and sight fishing to cruising small mouth yellowfish (often referred to as a fresh water bone fish due to the power and speed) in the 2 – 8lb range is bound to get your heart pumping.

An Average Day: An average day starts with an early morning wake up call from your guide. After a quick breakfast, the boat is packed with fly rods, tackle, cooler boxes and packed lunches. Your professional Tourette Fishing guide will brief you on the conditions of the day and general plan and tactics for the morning session, before you head towards the first spot. Lunch will be enjoyed on the banks of Sterkfontein Dam or in the comfort of the chalet, depending on your preference. Most days we only return to the chalet late in the afternoon, after an excitement packed day of casting dry flies to sighted yellowfish .

Pick up and drop off point (if not self driving): Harrismith, Durban, Pietermaritzburg or Johannesburg

Other activities: Sundowner cruises and game walks, game cruising and cultural excursions. The world renowned Royal Natal National Park and Natal Drakensberg are close by and definitely worth visiting.
